For the lovers of wildlife, birds and desert places,
this tour is a must. It will also appeal to the lover
of beautiful textiles, both old and new as well as
the lover of distinctive architecture. |
|
| |
We will be flying into Ahmedabad where we will spend 2 days. We will visit the breathtaking Calico Museum which houses one of the worlds' oldest collection of textiles. We will also visit Gandhi's ashram set on the banks of the Sabarmati River, this was Gandhi's headquarters during the long struggle for Indian independence. |
|

|
We
then spend 3 days in Zainabad where we will be staying
in the beautiful and remote landscape of a desert
camp. It is one of the most spectacular locations
on earth where you will stay in comfortable koobas
(individual cottages). This is at the heart of a
wildlife sanctuary giving you the opportunity to
see an incredible variety of flora and fauna as
well as an amazing variety of birds and wildlife.
Here we will be going on safari out of the camp
in order to see some of the wild animals in their
own habitat set in the more remote areas. In this
part of India the skies are crystal clear which
allows you to see a host of stars. |

We
then move onto Bhuj for 3 days, which was at the heart
of a devastating earthquake in January 2001. But the
heart of Bhuj beats as strong as ever, for it is from
here that we will visit a childrens' hospital and
school which has gone from strength to strength since
the earthquake. It is a development that we have closely
monitored since 2001 and many of our travellers have
become involved in supporting this particular project.
It is from Bhuj that we will visit a renowned textile
expert who has spent over 20 years developing her
love of textiles and who continues her research by
living in one of the villages. She has documented
South Asian textiles in museums and published many
articles and several books on textiles and designs.
This area of Gujarat is a beguiling area for the lover
of Kutch handicrafts . It has also some amazing architecture
despite a lot of historical buildings having been
lost during the earthquake. |
|
|
| |
|
We
travel on from Bhuj to Hodka for 3 days to a timeless
culture. Hodka is located in the Banni grassland and
is on the edge of the great salt desert - the Rann.
Kutchi embroidery is famous around the world. But
what you discover in this area is all the other traditional
artisans at work. This includes leather, clay, wood,
metal and mud work as well as exquisite silver jewellery.
Another undiscovered cultural treasure is their wonderful
folk music. |
|
| |
We will return to Zainabad for 2 more days prior to our return journey to Ahmedabad and that last minute shopping before the flight home. |
